Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Skye Skagfeld, an Artist based in Chemainus, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an 'outsider' emerging artist. I create bold abstract and watery landscape paintings. I have artwork in private collections in Canada, the UK, Australia, and the USA. I host independent art shows from my gallery space. My exhibitions and outdoor installations are typically attended by visitors and residents of Vancouver Island.

Tell us about yourself

I am a self-taught artist. My formal education background is in sustainability and management, and my passion for creating and sharing art was ignited following the completion of my Master's Degree in Sustainable Leisure Management.

I have dedicated myself to life as an artist, and despite the challenges and the additional work (not always art-related) required to sustain my practice, I remain dedicated to ever-evolving as an artist and an individual. My life is a work of art.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud of my independent exhibitions, which are held on celestial occurrences such as the Solstice and Equinox. Prior to the pandemic, I hosted these shows in my personal gallery space as well as regular outdoor installations.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am predominantly a 'right-brained' person, so I blame my lack of organisational skills and attention to detail on this theory. I find marketing my product and shows challenging as it takes away from my creative time. Reaching an audience and drawing guests to my gallery is an obstacle due to the location of the remote space; however, as I continue to showcase, I believe that attendance will improve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be sure it is something you love. This is cliché because it's true, we are good at things we like doing.
  2. Establish a solid network or team and be comfortable delegating tasks that employ the strengths of others.
  3. Find a mentor.
