Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chad Shivers, Owner of Sky Lantern Music, located in Acworth, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sky Lantern Music offers music lessons for guitar, ukulele, and beginner piano. We teach students 6 years and older.

Tell us about yourself

Music has played a dominant role in my life from early on. My father, an excellent musician in his own right, encouraged me to join the Grammy award-winning Atlanta Boy Choir and later to pick up the guitar. While studying classical guitar at Kennesaw State University, I started offering lessons which began my career. There are major turning points in a student's education, and being a part of that and the joy that accompanies it is the greatest reward for a teacher.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far with our business is developing a sizeable studio with a sense of community and fostering creativity in students of all ages.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Honestly, the most difficult obstacle that comes with starting any endeavor is just that, taking the plunge. If you believe in what you do, work hard, and have a healthy community of supportive family and friends, you can and will find some level of success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the plunge, as you never know if you will find success unless you try.
  2. Rely on the people around you for support, and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice if you need it.
  3. Be grateful that you are able to utilize your talents, and people will recognize that and support you and your business.
