Tell us about yourself
In 2008, I was in middle management and lost my job. Back then, it was hard to find middle management jobs, so I finished my last class for my master's and went to beauty school full time for skincare. After I graduated, I went back to corporate America. I worked on Skone in the evenings and weekends for one year. I launched Skone's website, but it was not easy. The first few years were very difficult with no sales, but with perseverance, things began to change. I partnered with a few beauty outlets, which led to brand awareness and sales in the United States and Canada.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We partnered with a beauty outlet and were able to get a purchase order for a few hundred thousand pieces, which led to an increase in brand and product awareness. Strategically aligning with them allowed other opportunities that continue to pay off.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is unpredictability in cash flow. Some months are better than others, and being able to stay afloat and profitable has its challenges. Being mindful of creating new opportunities and revenue streams always has to be a strategic part between scaling your business or staying afloat, especially during a pandemic.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
In the beginning, it can be hard, so start small and do something you're good at. You don't have to follow everyone else, do what feels natural. Lastly, even if things aren't working out as you hope, I encourage you to keep going and never give up. That yes, or that opportunity is right around the corner!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Running a business and life, in general, can be challenging. Practicing mindfulness and meditation helps with stress and can boost creativity. Remember to take time to recharge and relax. It's crucial to well-being and creativity.
