Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in cosmetics, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Manuela Marcheggiani, the founder of Isomers Laboratories, a skincare manufacturer in Canada.
Tell us all about your business...
Vertically integrated skincare manufacturing powered by science, inspired by nature. Our customers are those who treat themselves like someone they care about.
What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?
I had multiple challenges with my skin which caused a lot of emotional and physical stress on me. No one could help me, not doctors, nor aestheticians, nor so called beauty experts. I had two choices - learn how to fix my skin and move on with my life, or do nothing and continue to fall into darkness and struggle with self esteem and life. So the intensive research into what could help me began.
After a few formula attempts - success - my skin started to clear up - so much so - other people noticed and began to ask what I was using. When I explained it was a homemade recipe many came forward and asked if we could make something to help fix them as well - and the rest they say is history.
Our need to fix a personal problem - opened up the opportunity to help so many others with skin related problems. What motivates me everyday is my goal to help as many people overcome self esteem and depression issues with our education and information about the skin, skincare formulas, ingredients and guidance. Knowing that how we feel is so important and being able to encourage and empower while being able to be creative and disruptive is very motivating and energizing.
As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?
Being vertically integrated from initial concept to final product - to international distribution. We have been able to do it all ourselves ensuring the quality and integrity is ever present and consistent.
Being able to reach an international audience without losing the personal connection to each customer or fan. We have been the first on so many innovative fronts - which is all very exciting but more rewarding is how enduring our reputation for quality, integrity and safety / care continues to grow each day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?
Reaching and finding the people who need us most.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?
1- know your why - why do you want to start a business and make sure the why is because you have so much passion for it that you would do it for free.
2 - have a plan, have something to aim for and strive towards - without that you wont be able to move forward.
3 - be able to tell your story - to motivate others to buy into you and your plans - either as employees or as customers. The power of storytelling (honest storytelling) being able to get people to voluntarily want to support you with your plan and business is a very powerful thing.
