Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with B. F. Glenn, CEO of Sixth Sense Publishing, located in Washington, DC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sixth Sense Publishing is my legacy company. I default to it when I self-publish my work or provide writing and editorial services for others. Aspiring authors, entrepreneurs, and small businesses can benefit from the services offered under Sixth Sense Publishing.
Global Society for Aspiring Writers is a subsidiary of Sixth Sense Publishing. It's an affordable accountability solution for people who wish to write their stories (memoirs). That means it helps people through every stage of the story-writing process. They can outline their topics, draft, edit, publish, and promote them using the guidance in their user portal.
Tell us about yourself
I was born with a pen in my right hand and a notepad in the other. To this day, writing is my first love.
Over the years, I learned how to edit. Today, I am an entrepreneur and a professional writer-editor who has written, edited, and published projects for multibillion-dollar agencies, authors, magazines, and other small, creative companies.
For more than 15 years, I have trained others to set realistic timelines, build confidence, and explore various ways to get the project done effectively.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My most recent accomplishment is creating the Global Society for Aspiring Writers. That's where I can help others with writing. In a way, I am bringing them into my world! It feels good to give back in that way.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about business is not knowing what you don't know. Learning on the fly can take time and effort.
Also, it can be draining to overextend yourself in areas you may be unfamiliar with. Therefore, you spend long hours and become a jack of all trades (master of none).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Before you present your business to anyone, be sure it represents you well. That means obtaining that LLC and separate business accounts, investing in a secure website and professional email address, and having agreements/contracts/policy statements available for customers.
- Ask for help and advice from financial professionals whenever you are in doubt.
- Research any business that you plan to do business with. Make sure they are legit, and you can write them off during tax time. Give them W-9 or 1099 forms as appropriate before transactions.
