Six Sigma Exam the First Time - Six Sigma Study Guide
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ted Hessing, Creator of Six Sigma Study Guide, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people earn promotions and higher salaries and obtain their dream jobs by learning Lean Six Sigma, passing their certification exams, and applying these concepts in real life.
Tell us about yourself
I first built a website to teach myself concepts. Making a wiki is a great way to learn, especially context of inter-related examples. Posting my thoughts and understanding on the internet attracted a wide audience which a) challenged my understanding, helping me learn the material more deeply, and b) illustrated the wide appetite for these materials. Eventually, at the request of my audience, I built the study materials that I wished I had access to when I was certified.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping thousands of people pass their exams helped them find more meaningful and lucrative employment. I love hearing the success stories of my clients - especially ones who were able to provide a better life for their families.
Also, since the material is all about continuous improvement and can be applied in fields as diverse as medicine, construction, supply chain, education, and more, I love hearing about the work that my students do afterward. They're out there truly improving our world! If I play any hand in aiding this, then I feel it's time well spent.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Once your business becomes established (which is no small feat!), it can be challenging to say 'no' to a few segments of your audience in order to serve the greater whole.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do not delay.
- Do low-cost experiments by rapidly prototyping, getting market feedback, and improving.
- Have real human-to-human conversations with your audience. Find a way to impact someone's day, and you have a chance to impact their life.
