Doing Things a Little Bit Differently - Six Leaf Design

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsey Anderson, founder of Six Leaf Design, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Six Leaf Design is a brand + website design business for small businesses that are ready to take their identity and online presence to the next level. We work with bold companies to create brands injected with personality and user-friendly websites that make your life easier by working smarter, not harder. Our clients range from solopreneurs to medium-sized businesses from all industries, but we're particularly fond of working with creatives, therapists, service providers, educators, and health practitioners.

Tell us about yourself

I've been working as a self-taught designer since 2009 after graduating college with a BA in broadcasting communication. I started Six Leaf Design in 2013 after working at internships and small agencies after working in a toxic environment led me to look for other alternatives. I'm motivated by all the cool clients I get to work with and the knowledge that I'm helping to build a brand foundation that will help them reach their goals for years to come.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is becoming a role model to my friends, other designers just getting started, and my family. But tangible accomplishments? Getting to teach a session at Freelance Business Week in Denver, renting my own physical office outside the home, and breaking six figures.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is responsible. You know that people are counting on you, and they've paid their hard-earned money for your services, so it all falls on your shoulders to get it done and live up to their expectations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start before you're ready because you never really will be.
  2. Set up processes that you can follow over and over again, and always continue to improve them.
  3. Don't be afraid to say no to things that aren't a good fit because you're actually making space for things that are.
