Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chelsea Kidd, Founder of SiteWell Solutions LLC, located in Bozeman, MT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is SiteWell Solutions; we help companies truly put their people first. Our services include injury prevention, fitness, nutrition education, and mental health support. The ultimate focus is to boost employee well-being while helping build a culture that enables employees to feel supported and valued by their employer. Our customers come from a variety of industries but have one thing in common - their organizations understand the value of their people. We are thankful for all the clients helping us build a healthy world, one organization at a time.
Tell us about yourself
As a lifelong athlete, I've always recognized and valued the connection between personal well-being and on-the-job performance. I worked as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor in the early years of my career. My favorite part of coaching was observing the consistent link between a client's improved health and their newfound ability to reach their full potential in other areas of life. A common trend in the people I coached was that most of my busy clientele had one thing in common: they viewed their occupations, employment, and work-life balance as a barrier to managing their overall well-being. I always thought, how can we reverse this trend? We spend a tremendous amount of time each week focused on our jobs. Why not take a small fraction of that time and use it to help employees move and feel their best?
I eventually moved into the corporate wellness field, where I had the opportunity to support the workforce wellness programs for large government organizations and Fortune 100 companies. It was amazing to see the impact these programs made on the lives of others. I am extremely motivated by the vision of making workplace wellness and injury prevention programs accessible to more organizations and their employee populations. Every day I work to find ways that we can deliver these services to organizations in a manner that is cost-effective, meaningful, and sustainable. Through innovative approaches to workplace wellness and injury prevention, we have provided more organizations access to these services and, therefore, help more people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Moving the needle. This can be for individual results or the organization as a whole. Either way, my biggest accomplishment always lies in seeing objective data that our services are making a measurable impact. Often this comes in the form of a measured reduction in onsite injury occurrences, decreased absenteeism, and turnover. These wins also come in the form of individual participants reporting notable improvements in their mental well-being, overcoming dysfunctional movement patterns, eliminating pain, improving their relationship with food, and helping them have the energy to go home and play with their kids after work. I am so proud of what the SiteWell Solutions team has accomplished in such a short time!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As somebody who values my own well-being above all else, starting and running a business can be challenging. The demands of day-to-day operations can feel overwhelming at times. I must be very disciplined with my time and peel myself away from work to ensure I'm not setting myself up for burnout. I lean heavily on an arsenal of wellness resources to help me stay healthy, manage the stress, and continuously learn techniques that will help me continue to perform and move the business forward.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ask for support. Working with mentors has been a tremendous help in launching and operating my business. I strongly recommend that anybody even toying with a business idea reach out to SCORE. They have excellent webinars and a stellar mentorship program, and it's all free.
- Believe in yourself so much that you don't need anybody else's validation. There will be plenty of nay-sayers along the way and well-intentioned people who may say discouraging things. It's a waste of your much-needed mental energy to focus on this. Take steps daily to build your resolve, and keep moving forward.
- Take care of yourself. Your business will only be as high functioning and effective as its leadership. Invest in your mental health, get plenty of movement, and nourish your brain and body for performance - it will all show in your performance and capacity to build your business.
