Revitalize Your Wellbeing & Our Planet's - Sister Seasons
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Magee, Founder of Sister Seasons, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sister Seasons teaches women and menstruators how to revitalize their well-being as they revitalize our planet's well-being through our public workshops and programs and organizational services. We focus on supporting women and menstruators who care deeply about the future of our planet but feel that burnout and overwhelm are keeping them from showing up for the big things that matter most to them.
Tell us about yourself
My background is in environmental sustainability and social impact. Through my work, I learned that women are disproportionately affected by climate change and essential for developing effective climate solutions. But from my own experience, I knew that women are also burned out and unwell. The truth is that women are facing their own well-being crisis just as our planet faces the climate crisis, but both of these are the result of the same oppressive systems. That helped me realize we could address them both together, using nature and the menstrual cycle education to help women and menstruators feel better while also building their confidence and capacity to build a resilient, just future. Helping our community trust that their joy and well-being are critical to a more sustainable world is what keeps me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Running my business my way. Back in my days of working in philanthropy, I read hundreds (thousands?) of business plans for social enterprises and mission-driven businesses. And then, when my turn came up to be an entrepreneur, I thought I'd take everything that I'd learned and put it into action. But that hasn't felt right. Instead, I've listened to my gut, done what has felt right to me, and made a lot of space to move at the pace of my body. This is now a non-negotiable for me to make sure that how I run my business is aligned with the practices I teach. And I really hope it inspires other entrepreneurs, especially those who want their businesses to contribute to a just future, to challenge what we're told about the way a business is supposed to look.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Showing up every single day. Some days are really hard and lonely, and growth can be very slow, especially when you're introducing new ideas and solutions. It takes time to build a strong business, no matter what the internet tells you. And so it takes courage, resilience, and an insane amount of trust to keep showing up. But it's so worth it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get really clear on your vision and mission. Why are you doing this work? Knowing that will sustain you when things get hard.
- Build your support ecosystem. Your family and friends can encourage you, but they're not always going to understand your work - and that's ok! Find other entrepreneurs and partners who get what you're doing and can provide you with practical - and emotional - support.
- Remember that your business does not have to look like everyone else's. What works for someone else might not work for you. Take the time to figure out what feels good to you, taps into your strengths, and aligns with your values. There are no rules about how to build a business.
