Comedy Podcast About All Things Sinister - Sinisterhood

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in podcasting but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christie Heather Wallace & Heather McKinney, Creators & Hosts of Sinisterhood, LLC, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sinisterhood is a comedy podcast about all things sinister. Each week, we share sinister stories about anything from mysteries and true crime to wrongful convictions, cryptids, paranormal activities, and urban legends. Our listeners are podcast enthusiasts who enjoy well-researched topics, quick-witted banter, and authentic storytelling.

Tell us about yourself

We host Sinisterhood, two best friends who have both been performing comedy for over 15 years. Christie is a prolific comedy performer who has taught all levels of improv and delighted audiences both on stage in Dallas, at comedy festivals across the country, and on-screen in award-winning short films. Heather is a licensed attorney who combines her legal expertise and comedic storytelling and performance skills to make complex legalese understandable for Sinisterhood's listeners. We met at the now-shuttered Dallas Comedy House, where we discovered a shared love of researching and talking about all things macabre. In 2018, Sisterhood was born. Since then, we've been motivated each week to get together and take deep dives into all manner of sinister subjects so we can share what we've learned with our engaged audience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment has been achieving all of this success together. We started out dreaming of someday being able to pursue the podcast as a full-time career where we could go on tour to meet our listeners and do it all while having an absolute blast together. The fact that we have achieved any of this feels like a dream, but we are fortunate to have one another put in the hard work every day, brainstorm new ideas together, and encourage each other to keep innovating in the content we create.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Owning your own business means making all your own decisions. This can be a double-edged sword. While you have all the control, you also have all the responsibility. This can be especially difficult when you're navigating an emerging industry like podcasting. Even though we own the business together and have one another to help make decisions, it can feel like sailing through dark waters with no map. We are fortunate to have a lineup of excellent advisors on our side, including our producer, manager, agents, accountant, and lawyers, who are just a call away if we ever need input on a decision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Our top three pieces of advice are:

  1. Make sure you love what you do because you'll be doing it A LOT.
  2. Understand that you cannot know everything, and a good advisor is worth their weight in gold.
  3. When you run a business with your best friend, don't forget one of the key phrases used in improv comedy, "I've got your back." If you always have your partner's back and they always have yours, you'll succeed in improv and in your business. More importantly, you'll create a lifelong partnership with your best friend, and the upside to that is unlimited.
