Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morris Sims, CEO of Sims Training And Consulting, located in Forney, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are all about helping business owners get what THEY want. When we help someone reach an objective or see their desire happen, that is what makes me “run” it gets me up in the morning, and I will run through walls to see it happen again and again. We are all about the practical things in life. If it isn’t something you can use to grow your business, I don’t want to waste your time talking about it. We help businesses build systems and understand what matters to them so they can focus on 1 or 2 important strategies and see results happen for themselves, their families, and their employees.

Tell us about yourself

For years when people asked, “what are you going to do when you retire?” My answer was, “I’m going to start my own training business.” Lo and behold, when I retired, I had actually to do what I said I was going to do! I have never had as much fun in my entire career as I have over the past six years building STC and The Business of Sales. I love helping people see their desires come to life. I’d much rather be “Yoda” than Luke or Han Solo! I’ve always loved training, facilitating, and speaking (virtually or live), and now I get to actually DO the work rather than run a corporate department in NYC! The Business of Sales even fulfills a teenage dream to be a DJ on the Radio! My best years are ahead of me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping clients have some “Ah Ha” moments leads them to grow in their businesses. When we introduced one client to the concept of systems and “SOPs,” they were thrilled, and now they operate much more smoothly without dropping important things off the table. The owner is happier, clients are happier, and employees are much less stressed because everyone knows what to expect from everyone else.

Starting The Business of Sales and seeing the amazing growth for our show has been very satisfying. When we started, I was asking (begging) people to be a guest on the show. Now I record 4 or 5 episodes a week. People are asking to be guests on the show. We’re reluctantly turning down people who want to be guests on the show. We are beginning to publish two episodes a week with a library of episodes waiting to be edited and published just to get everyone on the air!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Focus. Realizing that you cannot do it all, you must choose the 1 or 2 strategies you really want to focus on and then do it. None of us can “focus” on ten strategies and have any of them be successful. You can’t go deep and stay down long on ten strategies!

Recognizing that you cannot do it all yourself! When I started, I thought I could certainly build my own website. All I had to do was buy this program, that course, and use this provider. You can do that if you want it to be all that you do. It is important to hire the right people to do what they do best, so you can focus on doing those things that only you, as the owner and creative mind, can do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Okay, there are three business things below. But this is the most important to me. Our family is what makes life worth living. All the ups and downs and drama and joy and sorry. That’s what life is all about. Don’t let your work overshadow what is most important; your spirituality, your family, and your work. Get priorities straight. NOW, let’s talk business.

  1. Spend some time thinking on purpose about what you want and why you want it. If you are jumping into something without clarity about those two things, you won’t be happy, and you won’t get what you really want. You have to make sure you’re clear about what YOU want, not what the world or others want you to do, be or have.
  2. Once you are clear on what and WHY then you can think about how. How are you going to run your business so that you can get what you want? The answer is your strategy. You can have one or maybe two strategies anymore, and you won’t have time to really make any of them work for you.
  3. Take time to be organized. Plan what you are going to do with your time each day. You don’t manage the time; you manage your actions and activities during the time that we all have. Make sure you are using it in the most effective way possible to implement your strategy.
