What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Simply Weddings. My customers are couples getting married in Nova Scotia.

Tell us about yourself

My first wedding I planned for a friend from church in October 2002. I was pregnant when she asked me to help her and had my daughter in the middle of the planning process. Once I had a taste of working for myself, I took the leap and started Simply Weddings in February 2003.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say staying in business this long. It's been a side hustle for many years until 2021, when I decided to do it full-time. I also created my own event called Bespoke: The Wedding Event, and I held it for three years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Continually having cash flow in a very seasonal type of industry. As a result, I am looking at new projects that will bring in revenue year-round.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

You have to be able to be not only good at what you do but also good at networking, social media, and running a business. If you don't have those skills, then ask for help or hire someone whose skills set it is. Often entrepreneurs try to do it all, and the best ones realize when it would be better for the business (and their sanity) if they didn't try to do it all.
