Improve Self Care - Simply Being Wellness Counseling
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystal Jackson, Founder of Simply Being Wellness Counseling, located in Farmington, CT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Simply Being Wellness Counseling is a therapy and wellness practice. We provide therapy to individuals, couples, and teens. We also offer wellness services such as workshops and support groups. Our customers are those seeking support on their healing journey. They may want to have better communication with their loved ones, build stress management skills, heal from traumatic experiences, or improve their mood.
We believe mental health care does not have to be overcomplicated. We offer tools to help our clients with coping strategies and self-care routines to maintain their mental wellness daily.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business as a side hustle. I was working full-time in corrections and part-time jobs as an adjunct professor and emergency room crisis clinician. I wanted to start something that would allow me to work with the clients I wanted to work with while also affording me the flexibility and a good income. I focused on helping professionals (teachers, medical professionals, therapists, caregivers, etc.) because of my own experience with career burnout.
Now I provide mental wellness consultations to individuals and organizations in hopes of helping them to establish healthy routines that support their mental wellness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is having three therapists on my team within six months of hiring my first employee.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Every day is an opportunity to learn something new or refine our processes. One of the hardest things has been allowing myself grace as I navigate this journey. I always tell myself to slow down and breathe. "You don't know what you don't know until you know you need to know it." This statement has given me comfort in the tough times when there's miscommunication with my staff, a missed payment, or errors.
People romanticize entrepreneurship, but it requires so much self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't quit your day job. Use it to fund your business. It will take some time to grow your business to be profitable, don't just look at the revenue but look at how much you have been able to keep.
- Grants, grants and more grants. There are so many opportunities for grant funding to grow your business or your knowledge. Go to your local library or research grant funding options. This can help with equipment, training, marketing, and more.
- Get you a support group that understands the emotional rollercoaster that comes with entrepreneurship. This group can reveal limitations, lend an ear or helping hand, or provide you with good connections.
