Linking Neuroscience & Personal Organization - Simplified

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Golightly, Founder of Simplified, Inc., located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional home organizer. I have a passion for problem-solving — organizing projects big and small and working with families to see their homes and lives transformed.

My team and I work with clients who are overwhelmed, stressed, and so busy that they don't know where to start. Sometimes our projects range from an entire home to 2-3 rooms that need some structure. For the clients we cannot serve in person, we offer tips, strategies, and how-to guides via our online platforms.

Tell us about yourself

When you come home from work or if you recently started working from home, you'll begin to see that your home is an extension of you. Therefore your home should feel like a vacation, not this noisy place where you get lost.

I wanted to help people get out of the "I should do this" and back into harmony with their homes. Because the truth is, you don't know how to get out of it when you're in it. I've created systems that make it, so it's not the perfection we strive for. It's progress. It's creating efficiencies in your home that make you feel lighter that lower your stress.

The thing that motivates me is the time that I create for my clients where they can now enjoy an evening with their family knowing their home office is in order. A heavy sigh no longer follows when they open the cupboards or go into their pantry to look for something. Life just flows.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say that my biggest accomplishment is the ability to serve people in person and also through the How-To Guides. I wanted a way for people who don't live in Calgary and cannot access me in person to feel a sense of relief when it comes to knowing how to organize specific rooms in their homes.

Our prefrontal cortex shuts down when we become overwhelmed or stressed, which is why a large portion of the organization understands the psychology of how our brains work under stress. Then you mix that with neuroscience and love, and you've got me! I always say to my clients who are feeling overwhelmed that if I were easy, everyone would have done it by now!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Multitasking! There are so many avenues when building a business that needs your attention, but knowing that multitasking creates brain drain and is not an efficient way for your brain to work is difficult. Because once you do decide to delegate tasks, the wheel for you doesn't stop moving.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Your customers come first! Always go above and beyond, and treat them like family.
  2. Don't get too caught up in setting up the business. Dive in, be persistent, and take the plunge. The rest will follow.
  3. Ask for help. We aren't wired to do this alone!
