Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanie Boeckman, Founder of Simple Living Mama, located in Anniston, AL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a blog and an online shop designed to help moms simplify their lives, homes, and homeschools. I sell a variety of printables that include planners, recipe eBooks, and educational activities for kids.

Tell us about yourself

I started my own blog in 2011 after blogging for What To Expect. I saw the potential of blogging and needed a way to make an income while being able to stay at home with my kids. Blogging allows me to be at home with my children and to homeschool them. That's my main motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was selling my first product. I can't describe how great it felt that people were actually purchasing something I made myself.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a busy mom, it is very hard to carve out the time to work. It's a constant challenge for me. I also struggle with deciding which tasks to delegate elsewhere.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Educate yourself. There's a wealth of knowledge available to help you do just about everything. Do your research.
  2. Invest in your business. Trying to do everything yourself in the least expensive way will likely prolong your success.
  3. Persevere. My business has grown much slower than most blogs of the same age. There were many times I almost quit, but I'm so glad I didn't.
