What's your business, and who are your customers?

Think about your life. In what areas are you thriving? In what areas are you just barely making it? In what areas are you missing the mark completely? Our boutique educational services firm supports clients to be who they say they are in every area of their life. We provide coaching, interactive sessions, and, most recently, online courses designed to build self-awareness as a foundational tool for continued growth.

The average person has spent a lifetime studying "great" people, theories, and structures. We help our clients see that they are just as important as the things they typically study. We help them become a student of their own thoughts and behaviors as they grow in their emotional intelligence. At their core, our clients are everyday people looking to be the kind of person their future needs them to be.

Our most recent addition of ME University provides a safe, virtual space for participants to:

  1. Seek alignment between their words and actions.
  2. Uncover the impact of their beliefs about themselves and others.
  3. Identify and reduce the impact of self-limiting barriers.

Tell us about yourself

My journey on this path started as an 8th grader at Prattville Junior High School in Prattville, AL. A group of us organized the first Black History Program in the school's history, and I was selected to be the student speaker. It was long ago, so I don't remember everything I said. I do, however, remember that the gist of the speech was to be who you say you are. I had no idea I would circle back to that all these years later.

My career began in Memphis City Schools, where I served as a Social Studies teacher and coordinator for the state's first public International Baccalaureate K-12 feeder pattern. I loved innovating with new teaching strategies like "Minute to Win It" games and station rotations. The innovations were impactful, and I was called to lead sessions for other Social Studies Teachers across the district. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was facilitating at the National Middle School Conference. I was afforded the opportunity to coach other teachers to be innovative, and my love for coaching took root.

That love only grew deeper in the roles of the dean and then principal with Gestalt Community Schools. Eventually, the calling was too great to ignore, so I transitioned to full-time coaching with the national non-profit, Leading Educators. As a coach to coaches at Leading Educators, I began to innovate again after serving as a meta-coach in Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence Certification program. In 2021, my future self called me to entrepreneurship, and I picked up the business I had founded in 2017, Silent Rock Educational Services, LLC.

Every day I get to support people and organizations to move closer to the life that brings them joy. These days I'm gaining energy from the high school students who are growing their emotional intelligence through ME University and using it to remind their parents of the dreams they may have lost touch with. My heart smiles as I think about the power of these young people learning now what it took some of us 40+ years to learn.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been betting on this vision. The last year has been a remarkable journey as an entrepreneur and coach. I'm proud that I did what I support my clients to do. I became a student of my own thoughts and behaviors, and it works!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part for me is always the business side of the business. I am a creative. I love the art of coaching, speaking, and building learning experiences. I learned pretty quickly that the business requires just as much energy and attention as my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a coach. Many mistakes are avoidable. There are even state-sponsored coaches who will keep you from making some costly mistakes. If you don’t have money to invest in a coach, connect with as many entrepreneurs as you can to learn more. The vision alone will not sustain the business.
  2. Make sure that your business is connected to your purpose. The business itself is not your purpose, but it can be a vehicle for you to live out your purpose.
  3. Find your tribe. These are the people you can count on to be there whether you’re striving or thriving and especially when you need to be reminded of who you are in the midst of the noise.
