Elevating Beauty - Signature Beauty
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tia Adamson, owner of Signature Beauty, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a makeup artist. My business was designed to empower women for them to see the beauty they have inside on the outside by elevating their beauty. I believe that it's important that makeup enhances that natural beauty we all have. We all have one thing we can celebrate, and my job is to accentuate that and let them celebrate their individual beauty because we all have it.
Tell us about yourself
Since I was a child, I have always played with my mother's makeup, and like most young girls, I went through my awkward phase, and like most, I didn't have the highest self-esteem. I knew I always loved makeup, but I thought I wasn't pretty enough to be an artist; well, I got a job as a makeup artist with a popular brand, and I finally felt like I had found my tribe. I found my calling, and when I started connecting with clients, talking and working with them, I felt whole. When my clients text me and say, I fell asleep with my makeup on or when they first sit in my cheer, and they don't seem to be happy, and then they sit taller by the time their makeup is done.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was starting my own line of lashes. Because it literally started with vision and drawings. I remember going on google looking up manufacturing for lashes and calling all the way to China and explaining exactly what I wanted when I got them; I cried because I envisioned. My other biggest accomplishment was after years of working as a makeup artist; I realized my job was more than just putting on makeup but building a relationship with my clients like a sisterhood where they feel safe, and they trust me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the biggest challenges is funding. To secure funding seems to be daunting. Also, understanding your work is never done, and some days there never feels there is enough time in the day.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I think the key three things I would say would be being prepared to be adaptable life is constantly changing. Don't listen to what others have to say; your business is simply your business! Stay focused; yes, you will have bad days, but they don't last forever!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
One thing I would like to share is that being a boss isn't all the glitz and glam you see on social media. It takes a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, and some days you may want to cry, but when all is said and done, you are worth it, and it's worth investing in yourself. And I strongly believe in my company's line "Elevating beauty."
