Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and organizational development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joann Bellenkes, Founder of Sidecar Coaching, located in Yorba Linda, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a certified coach in three niches: Executive coaching, Organizational Development Coaching, and Life Coaching. I work with companies as well as individuals who are looking to level up their skills, help them identify any obstacles that may be preventing them from moving forward in their personal or professional lives, and making action plans to move toward their goals. Overwhelm, and fear may cause people to become immobile or feel they are stuck or sinking. As their coach, I extend my hand to pull them out of the quicksand onto dry land and begin moving towards their goals, supporting them all the way to the finish line.

Tell us about yourself

I have been an executive in the corporate world for many years, as well as a successful entrepreneur. The common thread throughout my career was the joy and satisfaction I got from working with my peers as a mentor and coach. I realized that this was my true calling. It fills me with pride and joy when the people I work with share their feelings of restored self-confidence and a new look on life. It is quite humbling when someone is willing to be open and share their deepest thoughts, fears, and dreams, knowing that I will never judge but listen and support them. It's an honor for me to serve my clients in that way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a business from a thought to a plan, all the way to a viable business, and eventually selling it. Seeing it come full circle is very satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The life of a solopreneur can be lonely. You shoulder the burden of most of the important aspects of the business. Financial ups and downs are tough, and if you don't have a steady stream of clients, customers, leads, etc., it can be stressful not knowing what your next week or month will look like.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate. You will need that passion when you feel like throwing in the towel.
  2. Know your numbers. What's coming in, what's going out, and what your profit is is more important than what you show you are bringing in.
  3. Don't let anyone discourage you. Some may try to "protect" you and not understand your dream. Don't pay attention to them.
