Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaShondra White, President of Sheer Faces LLC., located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sheer Faces helps women save time in their beauty routine each day with lash and brow services. The studio was created to allow busy working women to come in for a self-care day so they don't have to worry about their lashes or brows not looking ready all the time. My motto is, "Come in for a nap. Wake up with lashes!"

Tell us about yourself

I have lived below poverty as a single parent. I managed to put myself through college and Cosmetology school. I always liked makeup and hair because it made me feel good about myself, even if I was suffering inside.

I graduated from Douglas J. Aveda after the original school I attended, Regency Beauty, closed suddenly. After winning the top prize in the Profession Beauty Association Beacon contest, I knew I wanted to, at some point, own my own beautiful space. Then the Pandemic hit! After working at a retail department store for over nine years, I was let go. The combination of losing a job and a pandemic showed me, "I need to find a way to use my skill to allow me the freedom I want for my life, and make money that can move to the next level with." So I fixed my credit. Used what little money I had and jumped all into making my lash business come to life.

I am motivated each day, knowing, "If I fail at this, then at least I know what the outcome was. I did not just sit by and build someone else's dream each day. I built a business that people like to visit, and they appreciate who I am and my skill set."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is sticking it out during a pandemic. This is hard. It's not easy, especially now, but I keep moving, and I use what I do have to help me get to a new level as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say feeling like no one sees me or my business. I feel like I'm making content, but it's not making potential clients convert at a good rate.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep a source of income that comes in on a regular basis. If it's a job, then punch in but know when to leave the job alone for the day. Your goals and dreams matter.
  2. Write your plans on paper. You're more likely to finish or accomplish a goal if you write it down. Then read your plans each day. It will give you strength for all the rough days you will face.
  3. Leave stuck people behind. When you decide you want more in your life, everybody cannot go with you. Put them in their respective place and keep moving! The universe will make room for you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a mompreneur is one of the scariest things I have ever done. The strength that you will gain as a small business owner will stick with you and will lead you to your greatness. You have greatness in you. Everything you have to succeed is already in you.
