SHE Did It Videography - Jenny Young

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenny Young, Owner of SHE Did It Videography, located in Wadsworth, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SHE Did It Videography offers creative filming, editing, and video content to small businesses and non-profit organizations in Northeast Ohio who are looking for out-of-the-box ideas. As a producer, videographer, and editor, I believe in people over profit and that access to quality, Hollywood-inspired video content should be available to all small businesses and does not require a big box budget.

Tell us about yourself

I graduated in 2009 from the University of Akron with a degree in Mass Media Communication and a Minor in Creative Writing, but my first videographer opportunity came as a fluke when I was on the hunt for my "forever" gig. This chance opportunity with a local magazine would reignite my childhood love of a camcorder, allow me to film around NEO, and create and edit digital content for small businesses. In a single day, I could film anything from a tattoo removal to a pile of mulch, and that was enough for me to fall in love with the endless creative options.

I worked for nearly eight years as the sole producer, videographer, and editor for numerous video projects a week, but in 2018 the decision to marry community and volunteering with locals became even more important to me, and thus, SHE Did It Videography was born. Community collaboration and community networking are at the heart of what keeps me motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

SHE Did It Videography has won a number of local, regional, and national awards:

  • Six Clapper Awards from WCTV, located in Wadsworth, Ohio
  • A nomination for a 2018 & 2021 Ohio Rosie Award for "Entrepreneur of the Year"
  • 2020 Hometown Media Award, from Alliance for Community Media, for "Old Fashioned Days at the Soprema Senior Center"
  • 2020 recognition in the PSA Category as part of the Philo Festival of Media Arts FOR "Old Fashioned Days at the Soprema Senior Center"
  • 2021 People Telly Award for AUI’s "The Dread Pirate Health Insurance"
  • A 2022 Community Award for Van's Tire “You’re Kidding Right” feat. Nick Chubb
  • 2019, 2020 & 2022 "Women You Should Know" from The Medina County Women's Journal
  • As well as several other community recognitions and acknowledgments that continue to lift and warm my heart.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing when to ask for help and balancing: the fun, the networking, the family time, the social media, being present, parenting, taking breaks, staying motivated, taking the time to read, drinking enough water, avoiding burnout, limiting your cups of coffee, holding yourself accountable, maintaining hobbies, staying relevant, going for walks, catching up with friends, and giving yourself enough credit while you successfully balance all of these things... because there is so much more that is not listed. Laundry!! I forgot to mention the laundry!!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a support group in the community.
  2. Join your local Chamber of Commerce and get involved with those humans; they will keep you lifted.
  3. Volunteer in your community/join a committee and make your face recognizable to the people in your community.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You will learn a lot about yourself. Understanding that a bad day doesn't last forever and know when to take a pause from your emails, create boundaries from clients and establish how much access you will give your fans.
