Textures, Colors, Playful Themes & Symbols - Sharon Volpe

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sharon Volpe, Founder of Sharon Volpe Artwork, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an NYC artist and illustrator. I showcase and sell my original artworks through prints, pins, tote bags, and postcards, among other items, in art shows and outdoor artist markets. Most of my customers are women who love fashion, culture, and do-it-yourself products that have a women-dominated look and feel.

Tell us about yourself

I am an artist, and having received an MFA in Illustration, my first goal was to create work that shows emotions, feelings, and a sense of pride. I began creating mostly portraits as a starting point that shows emotion through color, symbols, and textures. I began expanding beyond portraits into icons, concepts, and narratives and even started creating cityscapes. What motivates me is that I know I have something unique to say with my artwork, and I continue to push myself to make more art so that story continues. New work and, of course, when people buy or even contact me to tell me they love my art is also a motivator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I created enough professional yet creative, unique work to be able to have a stand in a busy open artist and vendor market in NYC. It has many levels and price points. I feel good about the many products with art I can offer to an art collector that comes up to my stand.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are many lows that you have to go through. Being rejected from a popular event that you looked forward to getting your work into or submitting work to a contest doesn't make the city. There could be months with very low sales. But as an artist and entrepreneur, one must push their way through and continue on this amazing journey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work on your product every day for at least two hours.
  2. Invest in yourself.
  3. You should ask your peers for open, honest feedback.
