Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sharon Jackman, Founder of Sharon Jackman Hypnosis, located in Wake Forest, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a hypnosis specialist for women who want to reclaim the power that was taken away or given away in the past. Using a process that’s as natural as daydreaming, we get rid of the fear and anxious feelings that are keeping them stuck. So they become calm, confident, and in control — and ready to conquer the world.

Tell us about yourself

I got certified in clinical hypnosis in 1993 after working with a hypnotherapist myself. In 3 sessions, it eliminated the fear and anxiety I’d struggled with for 3 years. That’s it; I was hooked. When I saw how much that freedom improved my life, I wanted other women to have that, too.

Fast forward a few years when I discovered an even deeper layer of my mission: To help women heal their unworthiness. So many incredible women hold themselves back because they don’t feel good enough, or smart enough, or pretty enough. With hypnosis, we dismantle, dissolve and erase those old, untrue stories — so my clients can own their personal power. The ripple effects that come from that are profound.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’ve won my share of awards over the years. But my biggest accomplishment is what happens out of the spotlight day in and day out. By bringing a compassionate presence to every session, I’m able to create a safe space for my clients to let their walls down — and embrace the healing their souls are crying out for. That’s what gets me out of bed every morning. It’s an honor and a privilege.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning how to manage cash flow so there’s plenty in the coffers for both the good times and the slow times. It’s so easy to mistake income for cash flow, but you’ve got to dial that distinction in if you want your business to last. It’s not sexy, but it gives you the security that empowers you to reach for more. And let me tell you, that’s hot!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be honest with yourself. Do you have the discipline it takes to keep going, day in and day out, without a boss there to push you? Or are you willing to develop it? If you’re not built for that, great! Self-awareness is always a good thing. But if going solo is your dream, don’t let anyone stand in your way.
  2. Be willing to put in the time. The Internet gurus preaching about making money while you sleep steered a lot of good people wrong. Owning your own business takes work. As Lori Greiner of Shark Tank once said, “Entrepreneurs are willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week” for someone else.
  3. Be sure your heart is aligned with 3 things, especially if you’re a woman: your process, your people, and your purpose. You want to love the process you use, love the people you use it with, and love the purpose or the reason you do it. Once you’ve got all 3 in place, it’s magic. You’re on your way to the kind of fulfillment most people can only imagine.
