Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhonda Morrison, Creator of Share Cook Love, located in Katy, Texas, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Share Cook Love is a chef-prepared meal services company offering delicious, ready-to-eat meals designed for individuals and families - or those who love to eat well. Our customers want 5-star meals on hand. And they want to know that dinner is handled every day of every week. We currently serve the greater Katy, Fulshear, and Richmond areas of Houston, Texas, and we are growing! What sets us apart from other gourmet meal delivery services is that we deliver fully cooked meals packaged by the individual serving or "family style" with four full servings in ready-to-heat-and-eat containers. We have custom meal packages that we create collaboratively with our clients to suit their needs and tastes, as well as weekly rotating and seasonal menus featuring a variety of flavors and cooking styles to choose from. Our menus feature both healthy options and traditional comfort food, and our clients can choose the portion size that works best for them with pricing options based on portion size to ensure that our customers receive the most value for their dollar.

Tell us about yourself

I have been inspired by food my whole life. Born and raised in Louisiana to Cajun parents, food has always been central to everything in my life and culture. I first learned to love food and to cook from my mother, and as I grew and moved from Louisiana to Texas, my tastes and repertoire naturally grew as well. Along my culinary journey, I have been the "Sunny Chef" for the local radio station Sunny 99.1 in Houston, the food and recipe writer for several publications, including the Fort Bend Herald, and won many awards for my cooking, including the Today Show's Chili Cook-Off in 2011. My love of food and passion for learning next to me to spend two years in Mexico and the Caribbean, learning the flavors and cooking styles of those regions before returning to Houston in 2022 with an idea... to fulfill my first passion... which is simply to cook for people who wanted excellent and easy food that makes them feel wonderful - available to them on a daily basis- right in their homes, without spending a fortune. The feedback I receive from my clientele inspires me to create more new recipes and motivates me to create more enjoyable dining experiences for them every single day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a "foodie" and small business owner, I cherish the opportunities I have had to impact the lives of people recovering from surgeries and long-term medical conditions that have precluded them from enjoying the delicious foods they were once able to enjoy. I have been able to serve people who find it challenging to dine out or people with a desire to help a friend going through a difficult struggle by providing home-cooked, from-scratch meals. I see my business not only as a source of income but as an opportunity to improve the quality of daily living for others - even if in some small way - and I consider this to be not only my greatest professional accomplishment but also a personal one.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Starting a small business always involves some "bootstrapping," but learning to discern what you, as a person, can manage on your own and what tasks/labor you can delineate/offload/outsource - and WHEN you can afford to do it or should do it - can be the greatest challenge in growing a business. For me, help with accounting and branding/marketing were two areas that I knew were professional weaknesses for me.. and areas that, frankly, I don't have a lot of enthusiasm for. Living a life of freedom and joy for me is knowing when to look for support in my less-than-favorite areas of running a business and making the investment to hire the right people/teams to support me so I can focus on the things that I do have passion for that are central to the success of my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Chef Rhonda's Top 3 Tips for anyone looking to start their own "Entrepreneurial Adventure": First, where there is a will, there's a way. There is a solution to every problem if you choose to find one. Second, make sure to protect yourself. Set up an LLC, get good business insurance, and set your business up properly from the beginning. And third, join small business associations and clubs or communities that will help you in finding your clients and network. Many times these groups of people have gone through the struggles of starting a business and can provide the wisdom from experience that a new business owner is building.
