Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shana Shwachman, owner of Shana Simkin Shwachman, LMFT, located in Worcester, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Licensed Clinical Therapist, and my practice focuses on treating adolescents and young adults experiencing anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, life transitions, depression, and family conflict. I help individuals and families develop insight, understanding, and compassion for themselves and others, and my goal is to equip my clients with skills to become more resilient and successful. I provide telehealth services online for Massachusetts, Washington DC, and Maryland residents, and I also offer in-person therapy at my Worcester, MA, office.

Tell us about yourself

All of us can use a little support and encouragement sometimes. I know that has been true for me in my life. In particular, adolescence and young adulthood can be very difficult times. I help my clients learn they do not have to navigate this stage of life alone while instilling confidence in them and their ability to face challenges head-on. I have always enjoyed helping others, more specifically, helping others help themselves. I feel lucky to love what I do every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been my move to private practice. This involved joining the business world with no specific training or prior experience, well beyond my comfort zone. Creating a team to accomplish this goal has proven to be quite fulfilling. There is such a need for mental health services, and I am proud to provide high-quality care and support to the community as a business owner rather than as an employee.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest yet most important things has been learning to trust myself to make decisions for the business. Prior to starting the practice, I was always part of a clinic where a supervisor or manager would make decisions or solve problems. Now I have taken on that responsibility for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about your business. Constantly remind yourself what motivates you every day and how you can make value-based decisions on what is important to you.
  2. Ask for help. Everyone struggles at times, and it only benefits you and your business to seek support when you need it.
  3. Always continue learning. Even if you are a seasoned professional in your field, there is always more to learn. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and put yourself out there. We are all constantly evolving and growing, and we can only do this when we get out of our comfort zone.
