Healthy, Plant-based Granola! - Shady Lane Foods
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Virginia McQueen, Founder of Shady Lane Foods, located in Barrington, RI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is making healthy, delicious, and affordable granola! My customers care about nutrition; since my product is gluten-free and vegan, it appeals to a wide audience.
Tell us about yourself
I worked in corporate America and a University setting for over 35 years. In both arenas, I was frustrated by the lack of food options for those with dietary restrictions. I was also surprised by how expensive quality granola was in the market. For these reasons, I developed a recipe and technique that allows me to offer an artisan granola at a reasonable cost. In an effort to reach those who may not have access to my product, I regularly donate to a local food pantry.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Appealing to a wide audience, ages 9 months to 90+ years, and reaching those who live in inner cities where "food deserts" are common are my most proud accomplishments.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being present for both interacting with the customer and producing the granola is a challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Talk to someone who has been in a similar business for a few years and ask them for their tips.
- Consider how you will balance both work and personal life. Be ready to make some tough choices, and be sure your loved ones are there to support you.
- Be prepared to pivot if your business model is not working. Consider such a pivot as an opportunity for growth and success, not as a failure.
