Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mollie Ferguson, RD, LDN, IFMCP, Founder of Seva Functional Wellness, located in Lansing, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder and CEO of Seva Functional Wellness, a functional medicine health consulting business. I work with active individuals to increase energy and decrease mystery symptoms, supporting them to live their best life possible.

Tell us about yourself

Back in high school and college, I felt tired all of the time, had painful stomach issues and had difficulty concentrating. These seemingly unconnected symptoms were a result of toxic mold exposure from the a/c until in my home. These symptoms made it difficult for me to show up in all areas of my life, including sports. As an avid CrossFitter, Olympic weightlifter, and business owner, I couldn't afford to let my challenges get in the way of what I loved doing most. So, I continued my education beyond being a dietitian and became a certified functional medicine practitioner from the gold standard, the institute for functional medicine.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is making my clients feel understood and heard when they had half a lifetime of being gaslit by other medical professionals. I pride myself on giving people hope for healing when they have none. Making a foundational lifestyle change is powerful and can significantly change the trajectory of chronic disease, if not fully reverse it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I struggle with is mentally, as a business owner, is being worried about not reaching enough people. The majority of the people living in the world need to learn what I can teach them. I can teach people simple yet effective habits that will change their health for the better. My greatest fear is leaving this world without having helped the people that want and need my knowledge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe that your hard work will pay off.
  2. Positively impacting 5 people is better than preaching to 100 that aren't open to your services.
  3. Take care of yourself first. The old saying "you can't pour from an empty cup" is SO TRUE.
