Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Dorfman, Co-Founder, and CEO of Sesh Corp, located in Topanga, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We help make parenting easier. We serve millennial parents with children two to five years old and help them build healthy relationships and manage behavioral issues with their children, specifically tantrums.
Tell us about yourself
We started Sesh with a big vision of helping people across the world improve their communication and soft skills. My co-founders and I have spent our careers working to help people unlock their potential as professionals and leaders. Along the way, we discovered a few profound insights. One, most people who struggle with soft skills like empathy, communication, and leadership, often lack the self-awareness to realize they are struggling. Two, there is a moment in most people's lives where our struggles with these skills become obvious and self-evident, and that's when we become parents. When we discovered these insights, we pivoted our approach to the market and made Sesh into an app to serve parents and help them with some of the toughest challenges they face raising young children.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment to date is helping build an incredible team of dedicated colleagues all focused on the same mission. Gathering a group of like-minded people to tackle an incredibly hard problem and sharing the good times and bad times together is very gratifying.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a business owner, you sometimes have to make very quick and consequential decisions that have an immediate impact on people's livelihoods with imperfect and incomplete information. The challenge, as I see it, is you have to make these decisions and have confidence in your decisions even if it's unclear at the time if, ultimately, it was the best decision. If not, and you try waiting for more information or a change in the business climate, you can wind up destroying everything you've built to date. These moments are not often, although more often than people think in a startup, but when they do happen, they are incredibly stressful. They truly test your character and strength as a business owner. You will only know if you make the right call(s) if your business continues to grow and adapt as you move through the future.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Who you partner with to start your business is the most important decision you will make.
- Ideas don't really matter; finding a real problem that you are uniquely qualified to solve and proving with real data that you are solving it is the only marker of business success.
- Resiliency and perseverance will be needed in abundance. You will be rejected more times than you can imagine, and you will fail almost every day at something. The key is to learn from failures and rejections and continually adapt, and don't give up.
