Enjoy Life to Its Fullest - Serious Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Judd NeSmith, owner of Serious Fitness, located in Longmont, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a personal training business in Boulder, CO. It was launched in 2003, and at least 75% of my clients have been working with me for 10+ years, quite a few for 15+ years. Most of my clients include CEOs, entrepreneurs, and many leaders in the business community.

In 2020 I launched an online personal training business that caters to the 50+ population. It includes an 8-week program called PROJECT REWIND. It is designed to help people turn back the biological clock with diet and exercise. I have clients all over the world participating in these programs.

Tell us about yourself

Since the age of 15, I have been a certified "gym rat." I fell in love with strength training at an early age because it helped me overcome a body image complex. Plus it paid off in a big way while playing football and baseball. Adhering to an exercise program taught me discipline and consistency. Both of these habits helped me gain some financial freedom as an entrepreneur in my late 20s.

At age 54, I can honestly say that I have not missed too many days in the gym or participated in my other forms of favorite exercise, such as cycling, running, and cross country skiing.

After spending 12 years in Los Angeles as a network radio executive and entrepreneur, I realized that I needed to pursue more meaningful work that was in line with my core values of health and fitness. I experienced the toll of entrepreneurship and how the stress of operating a business could negatively impact your overall health, especially your fitness. So I sold my company, took some time off, and launched a personal training business in Los Angeles that followed me to Boulder, CO.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Consistently generating a 6-figure income while keeping the same clients for 10-15 years. I'm also excited about the quick growth of my newest business, online personal training.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start lean.
  2. Read books written by successful entrepreneurs.
  3. Find time to play.
