Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stuart Kaplowitz, Owner of Serene Pathways Counseling, located in Chino, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are therapists helping people when they get stuck in life. We work with those experiencing anxiety, sadness, loss, communication issues, anger, and so forth. We believe that everyone has the ability to address what is in front of them in life, but sometimes, we all get stuck and need support. This is where we come in. Helping children and adults through these difficult moments is a wonderful opportunity for us, and we thrive in their growth as well.
Tell us about yourself
Over the years, I worked in group homes, foster care, school-based work, and community clinics with adults and families. I (we) love to see people get the support vs. thinking they have to do it themselves as if they might be the only ones suffering. Too often, I fear we have this learned mentality that we can't share because of how people will respond (perhaps tease us or put us down). Many clients come in sharing things like "I've never told this to anyone before," keeping whatever painful secret inside as it has eaten away at them. Being that go-to place can remind all of us that there is support and we each deserve it. We cannot solve all of our problems alone; it is not possible. It can truly take a village, and when we do tackle an issue or overcome a moment, seeing that joy and accomplishment is neat for me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having an incredible team of over 30 staff helping tons of clients each year.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
This question is required. Not being able to see everyone. The need can be great at times, and we can only help so many. Sometimes, we do not match the client's availability, a specialized need, or even specific insurance. We do not like to turn people away but do work with some local peers that can help support too.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I think having a plan on paper makes sense. Don't keep it all in your head or out of the hands of a friend, family member, or fellow talent out there who can see and support you as needed.
- Please do not expect to do it alone; this goes hand-in-hand with our belief that we all need support sometimes. Owning and running a business takes a lot of effort, and for some things (laws, local requirements, etc.), none of us are going to know without learning all the parameters.
- Don't become complacent, thinking you've learned it all. Things change (times, needs, laws, etc.). Just like in our personal lives, we are constantly growing and evolving. A business does not have to grow in size but needs to be ready for what's to come.
