Let's Work Together and Make It Happen! - Serena Stewart
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Serena Stewart, owner of Serena Marie RD, LLC, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a registered dietitian specializing in sports nutrition for female runners struggling with under-eating and negative self-talk. My clients range from new to seasoned runners who are ready to replace their negative relationships around their food and body with one of self-love, compassion, and confidence.
Tell us about yourself
I fell in love with running when I was 13 years old, which sparked my interest in nutrition. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur & run my own nutrition business, but when I realized how common under-eating is in the running community, it really inspired me to build a virtual private practice around empowering female athletes.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been creating an online community of female athletes who reject dieting and embrace their healthy, athletic bodies. It feels good to be part of a movement.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of entrepreneurship for me is dealing with the 'rollercoaster' of emotions that comes with different seasons. I really have to work hard on separating my self-worth from my income & learning that it's normal to have highs and lows on this journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The number one tip I'd give is to hire a mentor as soon as possible. In 2019, I put a substantial amount of money on a credit card and gambled on myself. That investment catapulted me into becoming an owner of a 6 figure business.
I'd also highly recommend staying on top of self-development work. Hire a therapist, do the inner work to help you understand the negative stories you're telling yourself, and to find skills to uplift you when work inevitably gets hard.
And last but not least, it helps to run a business you believe in. Work with integrity, and build a business that you feel passionate about and aligns with your morals. It makes every sale feel sweeter!
