You Are Worthy of More - Sheryl Kosovski

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sheryl Kosovski, Founder of Self-Worth, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Business and Money Coach for Creative Entrepreneurs. This includes any entrepreneur who started their business doing what they love but was never taught the skills they need to run a business and manage their money.

Tell us about yourself

I started out as an artist. My degree was in Textile Design. I had a business for designing and manufacturing fabrics for women's clothing and interiors and later doing decorative art in people's homes. I was always good at marketing but didn't really know very much about managing my money, but I was making a good living. Then in 1994, The Chicago Artist Coalition asked me if I could teach other people how to make a living in the arts, so I started teaching a class called The Business of Art.

I gave the students a formula for how to price their work, and just about every student told me after they had calculated what their price should be that they didn't think their customers would pay them that much for their work. I realized that if I couldn't help them overcome thinking that their work wasn't valuable and that nothing I taught them about marketing, production, or finding galleries would allow them to make a good living, I went back to school to get certified as a financial counselor.

I am motivated by knowing that my work allows others to realize their dreams. I can help them get out of debt and save so they have the money they need to reach their goals. That is so satisfying.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping people grow their level of self-confidence and self-worth so they come to believe they are worthy of making and having more than enough money.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Trusting yourself and having a business that represents who you are. It is so easy to believe that you have to follow what everyone else is doing instead of trusting your intuition and creating a business that represents who you are and what you value.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Allow yourself to dream your biggest dream. It doesn't take any more work to create your ideal than it does to create a compromise.
  2. Get to know your clients really well so that you can design products and services that they will want and need. This will also help with knowing how to write copy that will speak to your clients for your website, social media posts, and all your marketing materials.
  3. Find a group of people you can reach out to for support or join a formal support group for entrepreneurs. We all need to get feedback from others who are committed to our success.
