Achieve Your Nutrition Goals - Seed and Sprout Nutrition
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Strang, Co-Owner of Seed and Sprout Nutrition, located in Fort McMurray, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a team of two Registered Dietitians. As we are regulated health professionals, we are only allowed to see clients in the province in which we are registered - Alberta, Canada. My business partner, Ali, sees primarily families and children. Whereas I mainly see women for concerns such as PCOS, fertility, and developing a better relationship with food. Our practice is completely virtual, so we complete all appointments via video calls.
Tell us about yourself
Since I can remember (junior high, I think?), I had my mind set on becoming a registered dietitian. I only applied to one university when it came time to put in applications, as I knew this was the school I wanted to attend. The reason was that it had an 'integrated' internship, ultimately meaning that I could complete some of the 9-month internship required to become a dietitian prior to finishing my undergrad so I would be done in school sooner and be able to practice! From there, I practiced in various healthcare settings until one night I was contemplating private practice. I was telling an old coworker, who was on maternity leave at the time, about my private practice thoughts, and she said, 'let's do it!' Lots of late nights of brainstorming later, and that's how Seed & Sprout was born. Being able to help clients achieve their nutrition goals or see improvements in the symptoms of their condition is the best feeling!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment with Seed and Sprout has been starting the business, period. I never thought I would be a business owner. I always feared the financial issues and logistics of starting a business. But as cliche as it sounds, you need to just go for it!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a business owner, it is easy to always be 'on' and feel the need to respond to emails, be active on social media, and work on the next project. This is especially true for those of us who work from home. But an important piece for your own mental health is to set boundaries.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just go for it!
- Set work/business boundaries to avoid burnout.
- Do not attempt to do your own taxes.
