What's your business, and who are your customers?

Specialty Plant Boutique, my customers are typically plant collectors or individuals looking to bring a bit of greenery to their homes.

Tell us about yourself

Prior to owning my shop, I was a stay-at-home mom for several years; I used plants as an outlet to help manage stress and anxiety. While growing my collection and love of plants, I also built my knowledge and quickly became known as the local plant guru in my community. I offered help with repotting and general care and would even help people rehab their sick and dying plants.

I started trading uncommon Hoya that I’d grown myself from cuttings for fresh produce and other necessities until one day, I was offered cash and quickly realized this could be a great business opportunity. A few years later and I took the leap and opened the doors of Secret Garden, a small shop specializing in exotic tropicals. My motivation is seeing the big smiles on my customers' faces when they leave with their new plants.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to provide for my family while doing something I truly love.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the amount of time involved in general especially preparing the day-to-day operations. I’m lucky my family supports and helps when I need it. My business is unique as my inventory is actually alive and needs constant care, so it can be overwhelming at times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Know your product.
2. It’s not easy, but don’t give up.
3. Remember to have fun.
