What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tell us about yourself

After a very successful 20-year career in Silicon Valley, I had to start over after the dot com crash. I was aged out of my tech career, so I got certified as a coach in 2001. I quickly realized I had no idea how to market, so I immersed myself in marketing courses and conferences. I fell in love with marketing and started a full-service marketing agency. In 2012 I had the opportunity to write Ultimate Guide to LinkedIn for Business and Ultimate Guide to Twitter for Business for Entrepreneur Press. I focused my career on helping small businesses market their business and teaching LinkedIn marketing. I traveled the world as a speaker until the pandemic. Today I speak at virtual events, and I'm a frequent guest on podcasts. I love teaching and helping people grow their businesses.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm a four-time best-selling author and recognized as one of the top LinkedIn experts in the world. LinkedIn even invites me to their headquarters to pick my brain about LinkedIn.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You need to be very clear about who you help and how you help them. You have to protect your time because the work can consume you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get very clear on what solutions your business provides and stay in that lane.
  2. The pie is big enough for everyone, so don't worry about competition.
  3. Be honest. If you know you can't help someone solve their problem, tell them it's not a fit to work together and refer them to someone who can help them.
