Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allison Locke, Founder of Sea of Qi Healing, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm Allison, the Period Acupuncturist! I am a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner and Integrative Health Practitioner based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. I also see clients virtually from anywhere in the world. I help menstruators balance their hormones, have easy periods, and get pregnant naturally. A lot of my patients are struggling with PMS, period pain, infertility, PCOS, or endometriosis.

Tell us about yourself

I had always struggled with irregular and painful periods with brutal PMS symptoms and felt so lost with how to deal with it. Being interested in holistic health, I knew there had to be ways to support my body naturally. After going to school for Traditional Chinese Medicine and getting degrees in Acupuncture and Chinese herbology, I decided to specialize in fertility and reproductive health to be the resource I so desperately needed for myself when I was at rock bottom. Having been diagnosed with endometriosis, I'm particularly passionate about supporting my fellow endo warriors with their pelvic pain and symptoms.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Last year I reached my 10,000th acupuncture treatment! I also published a book about diet and your hormones called Eating for Hormone Balance. Lastly, I'm about to launch my first online course, Period University™, to teach everyone how to become an expert in their own period.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's so difficult not to compare yourself with others, especially with social media. When this happens, I remind myself to stay true to my brand and message, knowing that I will always reach the people my business was designed to support.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There is no perfect time to start. Just start showing up! Even when you don't feel 100% ready.
  2. Always remind yourself of what the client's needs and want are. How are you going to better their lives?
  3. Don't underestimate the role of compassion and relatability when engaging with your clients.
