Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Warnes, Owner of ScrunchCO., located in Edmonton, AL, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

scrunchCO. was born out of a fierce love (aka obsession) for scrunchies! Our promise is to provide you with the best quality elastic, cutest and trendiest prints, all packed into a scrunch that will leave you headache-free. scrunchCO scrunchies are truly a hug for your hair.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been very passionate about art. I grew up dancing competitively, did years of piano lessons, and never passed on the chance to get my hands dirty - whether that was in the garden, with paint, or in the kitchen! Sewing is something I had never done. Until one day, I had an epiphany to start my own business. Scrunchies were already my go-to accessory, so I made it my mission to design the perfect scrunchie!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the freedom I have created for myself. When I first started scrunchCO. I didn't really know what to expect. But as my business grew and the word started to spread about my products, I became determined to make it my full-time job. For the first couple of years, I worked 2-3 part-time jobs while trying to build up scrunchCO on the sidelines. Now I am SO proud to say that I have reached my goal of switching it from side hustle to the main gig, and I get to be a stay-at-home working mama to my one-year-old baby boy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats is the biggest challenge I face every day. When you wake up, you need to be the techy social media guru; an hour later, you need to become a professional photographer to get that perfect angle of your products. By lunchtime, you are also a customer service specialist! Running your own business is definitely a 24/7/365 kind of job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have a very strong support system! Having amazing family and friends to constantly cheer me on and help me when I hit speedbumps has been the main thing that keeps me going.
  2. Consistency! Even if you feel like all your efforts are getting you nowhere, I promise what you're doing is working. Even if you're just moving ahead at a snail's pace, there is a lot of ebb and flow in the business, so just trust that the things you are working so hard for will come to you.
  3. Do NOT compare yourself to others. This tip can make or break you as a business owner. It's no secret that other people are doing the same thing as you. But no one is doing it the exact same way as you. Keep your individuality and personality integrated into your business, and I promise you will attract your people!
