Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelli Watson, CEO of Scriptor Publishing Group, located in New Hartford, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
For someone who dreams of writing a book and doesn't know where to begin, Scriptor Publishing Group provides all the tools and resources you need to go from dream to published.
Tell us about yourself
When I was five years old, I told my grandmother that I was going to be an author one day. It took me 35 years, but I finally did publish a book, and then another, and eventually, I realized that I could help others do the same thing. As human beings, we connect to each other through our stories, and I believe everyone has at least one story to share, which is their own. Being able to help people write and share their stories inspires me every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There have been so many accomplishments since I began the business. We have worked with many celebrities as well as Olympic and professional athletes. We have also worked with everyday people who want to share their stories, as well as with people who have disabilities or have had life-threatening illnesses. We have even worked with teenagers who have dreamed of writing a book. One of our bestselling books was written by nine teenagers during the pandemic. It is called QuaranTEEN: Our New Normal. But I would say the biggest success for me is when a person holds their book in their hands for the first time. No matter who they are, that moment is an incredible accomplishment for them, and it is a joy to share it with them!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There are so many challenges with being a business owner, including managing your time and energy, staying on top of all the moving parts, figuring out when/how to grow, streamlining your systems to make things run smoothly, creating a team that works smoothly together...the list is endless! :-)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Remember that YOU are your business. That means that taking care of YOU is the most important part of running a business.
- Do what you do best and hire out the rest.
- Recognize that business is always changing and growing. There is no level that you reach in which you can say, "I've made it." Rather, business means a constant state of assessing and adjusting.
