Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Bluedorn, an artist, illustrator, and designer, based in Sag Harbor, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is in creating fine art and commissioned illustrations, and my clientele includes private art collectors, non-profits, and businesses as diverse as beer brewers, specialty foods, apparel companies, and even local farms.

Tell us about yourself

I have been making art my whole life and knew that is what I wanted to do as a profession. I started full-time as an artist and illustrator in 2015, and I am motivated to be my own boss, make my own schedule and pursue a life in art that is infinitely inspiring.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is establishing my own art gallery and running it in a physical space for 3 years, then taking it into the "cloud" as a pop-up project. I consider myself accomplished in being able to make my living as a working artist.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about running my own business is employing myself, keeping myself accountable, and staying on top of things like expenses and taxes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would tell anyone who wanted to start an art business to:

  1. Be honest in their capabilities to stay organized and on-task.
  2. Keep track of one's expenses and maybe get an accountant.
  3. Work on their business in some manner every single day.
