Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sabrina Bendory, Owner of SB Coaching, located in Woodmere, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a self-help writer and life coach specializing in dating and relationships. My customers are anyone looking to improve their lives and find lasting love.
Tell us about yourself
I've always loved writing and was always interested in human behavior and always kind of knew I wanted to study human nature for a living and write about it. I double majored in English and Psychology in college but didn't know exactly where I wanted to go with it. I was also always fascinated by relationships, mostly because I was always that girl who was too needy, too desperate, and always felt so disempowered when it came to my relationships.
I wanted to learn how to feel empowered and sure of myself, and that put me on the path of starting a website where I wrote about my experiences. At first, I was sharing from a place of sisterhood and commiseration, but eventually, I became an expert when it came to all things relationships and could write with more authority and understanding. What motivates me is the millions of women out there who feel the way I used to feel. I'm essentially writing for my younger self and sharing the advice and guidance I desperately needed.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think just going for it. When I started my original website, anewmode.com, blogging wasn't really a career. And even though I was young and naive, I really believed I had something to say, and I really gave it my all, even though it took years before I made a penny from the website. Also, the books I've written. Writing a book is a real mountain to climb. I've written a bunch of e-books, one book that I self-published and another that was just released with a publisher, and I'm so proud of the work I put into each one. With all my content, whether it's an article, a TikTok video, or a book, I want the consumer to feel changed afterward, to feel like they gained something valuable they didn't have before that they can now utilize in their lives to make it better.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The fact that it's all on you. There is no one to blame, you take on all the risks, and it's a lot to bear. Also, you never really get to disconnect from your job when you own a business. You don't ever really clock out, your mind is always on the business because it's a part of you.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Persistence- the key to success in life is grit! You have to push yourself, get up when you fall or fail, try again, and try something else.
- There are enough seats at the table. Maybe what you want to do has already been done, and that's ok! Do it differently. Do it your way. No one is ever going to do things the exact same way as you, so every business is inherently unique.
- Social media! I was very resistant to the social media train in the beginning, and for a very long time I wanted to pretend I didn't need social media to grow. I was wrong. Experiment with all the platforms, see which one is the best fit for you and put your all into growing.
