What's your business, and who are your customers?
Savvy Strategies helps busy families with the college admissions process. High school students are our primary clients, but by helping them, we help the whole family survive the process with their sanity intact.
Tell us about yourself
After more than 25 years of working in high schools - as both a teacher and an administrator - I decided to use my experience and expertise to help students and parents...on my own terms. I love being back to the heart of teaching: working individually with each student to help them reach their goals. And it's a joy to be able to do it on my own terms.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I worried at first that my clients would just be my friends and their kids. Expanding out beyond the first circle of friends to the second and the third was exciting. Now, I have clients literally from coast to coast, and that's a far bigger reach than I'd ever anticipated!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having spent my entire professional career on a salary, it was hard to transition to the mindset of assigning a monetary value to my time. I needed to learn new skills and new vocabulary for that shift.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be flexible! I am doing what I started out to do, but I've added important services that I didn't expect the market to demand.
- Learn as you go. Everything that happens - good and bad - is an opportunity to learn and grow yourself and your business.
- Get good software. Without it, you'll lose yourself in the chaos.
