Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Prusinski, Owner of Savvy Bird Consulting, located in Minneapolis, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Savvy Bird Consulting provides bookkeeping services and works one-on-one with solopreneurs and micro business owners (small businesses), tailoring training solutions to their workflows, habits, and skill levels for QuickBooks® software. Each team member loves to empower and encourage others to understand and manage their business financially. We meet clients where they are in the learning process and walk them through training individualized to their industry and skill level.

Tell us about yourself

I started working in accounting in 2007 at a CPA firm, but after seven years, it was no longer suiting me. I left the US and traveled to Latin America and Asia for the next 15 months, serving the communities where I was located. When I returned home, I decided I wanted to be more hands-on with the community where I lived, and my skills were in accounting and bookkeeping. Opportunities continued to open up for me to help small business owners in the Twin Cities of MN to help train them on their accounting software and provide bookkeeping services.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to help others run their businesses. I love seeing other people do what they are gifted with, and our team does what we are gifted with – bookkeeping and accounting. Small business owners can't wear all of the hats, and we love to be able to come alongside them to help them grow and flourish.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that I've encountered with being a business owner is growing a good team in order to meet the needs of our clients. It has been tough to find the right employees with the right skills, desire, and personality to work well on our team. We have a great time right now, but we would like to continue for it to grow because we have a waiting list for services. It's been hard finding the next right person for our team.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get accounting software and understand your numbers.
  2. Find people to join your "team" – mentors, advisors, and small business friends.
  3. Know when to invest in your business (marketing), invest in yourself/team (training), and invest in your bottom line (saving).
