Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Savannah Gilbo, a developmental editor and book coach based in Capo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help fiction authors write, edit, and publish stories that work. I'm also the host of the top-ranked Fiction Writing Made Easy podcast that you can find on almost any podcast player.

Tell us about yourself

I became a developmental editor and book coach because I wanted to learn how to write my own novel. But then, the more I got into studying the craft of storytelling, I fell in love with it and realized I could help other writers overcome the same hurdles I encountered. So, I started my business and haven't looked back since! Every week, I look forward to helping writers reach their next milestone--whatever that may be: finishing a draft, editing their manuscript, or publishing the book.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Many authors I've worked with have gone on to self-publish the books or landed deals with traditional publishers, so that's always very exciting!! My biggest accomplishment last year for my own business was creating and launching my signature course, Notes to Novel. This course walks writers through my 1:1 coaching process, but in a group setting.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is figuring out how to do everything yourself (but this can also be the fun part, too).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't give up if this is really what you want to do! It will feel like hard work sometimes, but it's worth it in the end.
  2. Keep yourself organized! I use a physical planner and Asana (digital planner); this has been a complete LIFESAVER in terms of managing my own business.
  3. Figure out what's motivating you—when things get hard, go back to your WHY. It will keep you going through the tough times!
