Become Your Daughter's Go-to Person - Saundra Golden

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Saundra Golden, a motivational speaker, author, consultant, and abuse survivor based in McDonough, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a mother-daughter coach. I teach mothers to build strong solid bonds with their daughters through effective communication. My customers are mothers who may be having trouble communicating with their daughters and building the relationship they desire with them. There is a disconnect between them.

Tell us about yourself

I am a survivor of a sexual assault and an abusive teen dating relationship. I wrote a book entitled, Make It Stop! A Young Woman's Guide to Overcome or Prevent Dating Abuse. The book was initially written to help mothers learn about the warning signs and red flags to educate their daughters and teach teens the same. But also to help those who may be suffering in silence as I did tools to overcome the abuse and move on with their lives. However, during the launch of my book and talking with mothers, I learned that they were buying the books for their daughters and, even though some of them had experienced abuse themselves, were not going to have a conversation with their daughters about the book or use it a tool to communicate with them and share their experiences but felt the book alone would do it. I then came to the realization that a lot of mothers don't really have a relationship, or a connection with their daughters, whereas they can communicate with them about any topic. I wanted to help mothers have a bond like I have with my daughters. One that will transcend time. Both my daughters are adults, and I am still their go-to person, their confidante, and they still want to spend time with me and do things together, and I love it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing my book and creating a coaching program that can help mothers learn to communicate with their daughters.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Growing my business and helping mothers understand that they cannot continue to necessarily raise their daughters the way they were raised. We are in a different time and different space. Helping them to realize that it's okay to get help. I am so glad I did, and it was worth every investment I made to have the relationship I now have with my daughters.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are ready to make the commitment. Starting a business is not for the faint at heart.
  2. Trust God to direct your path and the direction you should go.
  3. Get yourself a coach or a mentor. Someone who can help guide you along the way. Someone who not only motivates you but supports you.
