Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott A Smith, Owner of SAS Photography LLC., located in Litchfield, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SAS Photography is a full-service photographic studio. We specialize in families, pets, and headshots. Our customers include small and large families wishing to preserve a print legacy. As pets are often considered to be members of families, they are included and encouraged. Other customers include real estate agents and architects. We provide photographs, drone photography, 360° tours, and floor plans. We provide headshots for these customers. Recently we have begun to photograph students at local dance schools.

Tell us about yourself

I had a camera in my hands before the age of three, and that continues today. Today, I am motivated by the smiles and sheer joy when people see their portraits. Quite often, they are amazed at themselves since they usually only see them in a mirror.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is surviving the recent COVID-19 epidemic. I opened my studio on January 1, 2020. The epidemic hit just two months later. I survived closure, fear of personal contact, and lack of income.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

My biggest struggle today is encouraging people to come to the studio or even have their photos taken during the current economic times. Many people do not have the excess funds to spend on photography, but this is precisely when they should invest in their legacy for future generations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a business plan. The plan is always changing but provides a solid base and pathway to follow.
  2. Think outside the box. For example, I offered drone photos of families during the pandemic.
  3. Continue to explore and expand all means of meeting new customers, social media, print media, word of mouth, and personal interactions.
