Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Hayden, baker and owner of Sara's Tipsy Pies, located in Stillwater, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Hand Pie Company. We make pies infused with Local Wine, Whiskey, and Craft beers. My customers are Pie loves. People who value local and tradition.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a wife, mom of 5, and a benny dog. I jumped and the opportunity to start a pie company in 2012. My mom passed away in 2010, and I missed her terribly. She always made pies for those she loved. I'm motivated by tradition and innovation. Blending the two is so fun! I'm motivated by the people we serve. The wonderful stories and memories of pies I've been told by our customers are heartwarming. I'm motivated by my family. To better for them each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business for ten years!! I started with only a love for baking....no formal training in baking or business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it's work and family balance. Running a business is 24/7. Having five kids is 24/7, so finding a balance has taken me a while, but it's so important. My family is everything...

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Branding is very important. Get a great logo.
  2. There are no true shortcuts. You have to grow your brand.
  3. Don't pay for services you can do yourself. It's hard to do it all, but you have to save money where you can.
