Freelance Writer - Sarah Luyengi

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Luyengi, a writer based in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I enjoy writing and am a freelance writer in my spare time. During the pandemic, I had an abundance of spare time, which allowed me to return to pitching ideas for articles – from conducting interviews and Q+A to creating reviews and thought pieces. I’m interested in writing about underrepresented communities, like immigrants and people of color.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always liked to write since I was little. I used to make my own books out of construction paper and loose-leaf paper. I also have a strong interest in reading and gravitated to libraries/local bookstores when I was a kid. Eventually, I pursued a degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing at the University of Illinois at Chicago and graduated in 2014. Writing and creativity bring me joy, which is a great motivator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While I don’t own a business, it’s always a great accomplishment to have my work published. I’ve had work published in Borderless Magazine and Southside Weekly.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a writer, it’s quite common to hit writer’s block and have no motivation to create anything. It can be a challenge – and it comes and goes – but I treat it as an obstacle. Once I move past it, I become more motivated. Some of my best work happens after I experience writer’s block.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you enjoy writing and want to become a freelance writer, it’s important to be patient. You may experience rejection but continue to put yourself out there and find the right platform for you.
  2. Network with other freelance writers too. When you’re surrounded by a community of writers, it not only helps you stay motivated and focused but also gives you a sense of accountability.
  3. But most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It’s hard to find something that you truly enjoy doing but once you find it, stick to it. When you like what you do, it won’t feel like work. As a writer, it’s normal to face obstacles with getting your work out there or even doubting your own skills. But when you continue to stick to it, it will make a difference.
