Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah King, Owner of Sarah King Creates LLC., located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a service-based business called Sarah King Creates LLC. I help people move from overwhelm and stress to peace of mind and well-being through discovering and engaging their creativity. While the courses, workshops, and inactive presentations I curate can benefit anyone, I recognize that those who serve and care for others through their career or family responsibilities are asked to wear several hats while facing burnout, overwhelm, and often finding themselves lacking self-support.

As a Healing Arts Practitioner and former multi-hat-wearing nonprofit professional, I am passionate about equipping those who serve with creative tools, resources, and support to remember the person underneath all those hats. By guiding them to recognize their own needs and voice, release stress, and renew their energy, caregivers and service providers can not only put on their hats from a place of overall well-being but have the shoes and bag to match too!

Tell us about yourself

I learned the power of creativity in dealing with heavy things and processing emotions when I started sewing a line of baby clothes during a low point of burnout and grief in my late twenties. This was about halfway through my career in nonprofit working in youth and family serving organizations. Although I felt passionate about serving others in that way, I discovered during this time it was very hard to present to others when I didn’t even know how to deal with my own losses.

I stumbled into creating baby clothing after my first niece was born, and it served as a way for my mind to relax while my hands sewed. For the next nine years, I spent my time outside of my full-time job in nonprofit sewing, popping up at art markets, creating a website, and selling garments in a few stores. It was a fun hobby that pretty much just paid for itself.

However, a few years ago, it seemed time to shift to share the gift of what I’d experienced. I felt led to combining my gifts of teaching with my passion for creativity to guide others through accessing this gift of emotional processing while creating. That led me to the courses, workshops, and speaking presentations I now offer through Sarah King Creates.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel most accomplished when I read comments like these from participants that let me know my service and work are making a positive impact on their lives:

“The fact that I learned a new way to express and share my talent of writing and being creative. I call it expansion. “ - Tyson Haynes.

“The most meaningful part for me was when we broke the question, "Where have you been today?" Down into 3 parts. Mentally (in your mind), Emotionally (in your heart or feelings), and Physically (in your body). It really made me dig deeper in not just what I did, but how I felt about it and what I thought about it. “ - Tina Thomas.

“Extremely powerful lesson that felt like a much-needed therapy session that I didn’t know I needed. “ - Leboria Moore.

“Helped me to really take a look at myself” - Paula Dutton.

“Every chance I get to experience Sarah King Creates guarantees an invite to reconnect with my creativity while at the same time sharing a beautiful opportunity to see through a different perspective (specifically opening new understandings of grief and self-care).” - F. Reesie Reese.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Me! Maintaining a consistent confident, healthy mindset is certainly the challenge I spend the most time on curtailing since it is also the most powerful. There is much unknown in this path as I feel like I’m charting my own course. Having unlimited possibilities is, on the one hand, very exciting since I felt so stuck before, and on the other hand, unstable and scary.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in support. As I mentioned above, depending on the moment, my mindset can be both helpful and hurtful. I’m learning the time spent on keeping a healthy and powerful mindset in the midst of this entrepreneurial journey is absolutely worth it and pays off more than any business strategy. After trying unsuccessfully on my own to be my own mindset guide, I’ve sought out coaches in the past year whom I trust since they have walked their own entrepreneurial paths. I lean on their guidance as well as community support within their programs to embrace a healthier mindset.
  2. Spend more time and energy on the what than the how. I would describe myself as a “planner” type of person. I like knowing what to expect and how something is going to happen. However, I have learned surrendering the how and instead focusing more on what I’m called to do and provide is more fruitful. If I get tied down in the exact how it is all going to play out, I will talk myself out of doing a thing at all. Once I am on board with my next right thing to provide, the how becomes clear. Leaving a bit of room for mystery allows space for creativity and unexpected blessings.
  3. Prioritize your own connection to your inner self and whatever you consider your inner guidance or source. I know when I feel myself floundering and swirling mentally, I need to connect to myself and my source of energy. I found that creating (of course!), being in nature, moving my body, connecting with like-minded friends as well as time alone help me connect and get centered. From that centered place, I can listen and respond to the needs of those I serve and be a better flow, rather than spin my wheels or feel as though I’m grasping at straws.
