What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sarah Kahn Hair is a sustainable hair salon and thoughtfully curated, non-toxic beauty boutique in Seattle, WA. We love to help people look and feel their best using beautiful using products derived from nature. We have a clean beauty boutique both in-salon and an online store. Our client is someone who is ready to invest in their hair both physically and emotionally.
Tell us about yourself
Having my own hair salon was a dream of mine from the moment I began doing hair in 2001. I knew it would be inviting, relaxing and luxurious—a place where I could uplift people and make them feel their best. I love being able to help people learn basic skills not learned earlier in life around beauty needs. It's not about always needing to look put together, but it is about having the skills to do so when you choose. I am so lucky to be able to come to work in such a beautiful space doing what I love.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being in business for 10 years. This was always something I knew I wanted to do, so I am happy to say we are growing and thriving as a business year after year.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would say "shutting off" my brain from thinking of ways to improve my business is one of my hardest things. I can't stop; I am literally addicted. I will be getting ready for bed and have to fight myself not to start working on a new project for the salon.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ask for help all the time. Don't be scared; trust me, you don't know it all. Who does?!
- Hire great people who specialize in accounting, web design, and other areas in your business that needs help. Reassess the fit along the way.
- Ask your clients what you could do to improve their experience. I am always trying to up the client experience, and no one better to tell you than the client themselves.
- Keep things fresh...a client-facing business is like a relationship. You want to evolve together.
