Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Hessinger, Founder of Sarah Hessinger Art, located in Bellingham, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a contemporary abstract painter. I sell original paintings and drawings. My work is also available in fine art giclee, limited edition prints, mini prints, and greeting cards. I also work with individual clients and interior designers to thoughtfully create a perfect piece for your space or an interior mural. My clients are art lovers and individuals looking to enhance their work and living environments. Currently, I also teach group painting and drawing classes.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for art was developed and encouraged during my adolescence by my family and teachers. Struggling with academics during high school, the art room became a safe place to grow and excel. More recently, my art has become the vehicle for healing and transformation. In 2015, I started sharing, showing, and selling my art. This inspired me to make my art available to the world. Every day I am motivated by the joy and healing that creating brings me. Being in the studio, my physical space becomes a breeding ground for self-exploration, learning, and grieving. I am forever thankful for my artistic journey. I hope to inspire others to find a creative path that brings them joy and healing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As an artist sharing their art and putting it out there, my biggest accomplishment is overcoming the fear and self-doubt that can rob you of success. Allowing myself to be in a vulnerable space and being able to use this discomfort for personal growth.

Through creating a business selling my art, I have learned to ask for help. Get a mentor! Get help with your website! Don't be afraid to try something and make changes as needed, be flexible. My website is a work in progress that I am always updating. Thank you to Callie Saigh at Rise Up Web Design, I can always go to her for help.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being consistent in your marketing and keeping your viewers engaged can be challenging. There are a lot of great resources, tools and apps to help you successfully brand your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remove self-doubt & fear.
  2. Get help where you need it.
  3. Do research, and learn from others.
