Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Sherman, Founder of Sara Sherman International, located in Columbus, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I serve those who provide services to people with disabilities. These dedicated and frustrated providers are seeking to find solutions to their operational challenges so they can get on to the exciting and fulfilling work of supporting people with disabilities to become as independent as possible and have rich and memorable lives along the way.
Tell us about yourself
I have been working in the field for over 30 years. While my Bachelor's degree is in Public Relations, there were no PR jobs in my little town, and as a single mom, I couldn't afford to head to the city. Instead, I headed to the local institution for people with disabilities and found my passion. By holding practically every job in the field, I developed a deep understanding of the challenges of each role.
Direct service providers hold the most significant role and experience the most debilitating challenges. I understand how hard it is for the staff to do their jobs in this environment and how the staff challenges impact the people being served. I am passionate about helping providers fix these issues once and for all and get on with the business of providing innovative services.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my biggest accomplishment comes when I see that "aha moment" in people's eyes. Both when my clients understand that their challenges can actually be resolved, and then the second aha is when they realize how to actually make the needed changes.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing has been to know what help you need... and then actually find people who are able to fit the need.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have fun. It's so easy to get overwhelmed and make business ownership the hardest, most consuming job you've ever had. Pause, relax, take a vacation, and enjoy the ride.
- All business owners are in the same boat. Every business you see around you is experiencing or has experienced the same challenges, the same ups and downs, etc. It's just the process.
- Think ahead for several months so that you have cash coming in all the time. You don't have to look far at first, but at least 2 or 3 months out to keep yourself afloat as you build up your business.
